I was wondering when you were going to post about your Italy trip. It was worth the wait!!! When I came back from Italy, no one could understand how I could eat that much gellato, but once you try it, you just can’t get enough! Yum! Your trip sounded fabulous, I’m so jealous!

While reading this new blog entry I decided to count the number of times I check McNeilorama each day looking for a new entry. It must be at least 5 times at day. Maybe it’s six or seven on slow days. How many times before it becomes excessive? Do you get my point? The McNeilorama blog entries have made these two years without Andy and Tiffany near by much more bearable than it would have been without. The fact that the frequency of blog entries has dwindled is understandable but regrettable. I would like to suggest that you blog photo’s of some of the great trips that you have taken and not blogged about. We would enjoy a narrative but if time is too precious, you can just let us look at great photo’s of you guys and the places you have visited.

Hmmm, great story about the bed bugs. I haven’t noticed anything in my bed but this has certainly motivated me to do laundry tomorrow (interesting that the fact that I’m out of socks and under things hasn’t pushed me). Well this is why parenting is so much fun….you never get to an end…..it’s all journey…. A true pleasure it was to tag these two guys with something they had no reference for (panto) and then nudge them into thinking about it, after haveing tacitly avoided it (because they had no frame of reference)…and then when we take a look at what is playing in London Pantomime this year they find THE FONZE….funny anyway…as CAPT HOOK…hysterical just in concept. All the rest was of course laughs.

For me, the added bonus of a gift from parent to child of a missing piece of the jigsaw of her growing up…an English jigsaw piece. It was a great pleasure to throw it in there and see it take its place. There is not another kids audience participation forum like Panto. I wonder what will be playing next year……..

There was a point in this one where all three of us were laughing so hard that it was difficult to breathe, and where there was no likely probable end to a wild comedic improvisation that developed on stage. Tears were streaming. All the adults were near collapse with mirth. Can I tell you about it…yes and it would lose the build impact and timing in description. You just had to be there to experience it. Panto is like that.

Also Capitain Hook sings and dances a mean Happy Days routine with the whole cast. It’s not everyday stuff.

I like the fact that you used your neighbors’ recycling bins! “Do what you have to do.”
This brings to mind — My brother lives in a brownstone in Brooklyn. Every brownstone has their own garbage can and recycling bin. But I’ve been told that everyone is VERY protective of their bins. God help you if you put your trash in someone else’s bin. Well this does not sit well with me.
I’m used to Manhattan, where you just throw everything out on whatever corner you want.
So, when I walk in Brooklyn along brownstone streets, I purposely throw paper or cans in random people’s bins. I know they will freak, and I get the feeling that they are watching 24 hours a day from behind their shades.

Note that the symbol in the lower right of the MacNeil coat of arms is a red “bloody” hand. I’ve seen it with drops of blood falling off. Here’s the story as I found it on a web page:

The legend of the bloody hand in the MacNeil(McNeil,etc.) coat of arms, according to my ancestors is that when a “king” of Scotland way back when was bringing a boat of soldiers to capture the Isle of Barra, he promised that the first one of the soldiers to touch the Island, would be granted ownership of the island for his own clan. A McNeil happened to be toward the read of the boat, but he sure wanted that island, so when they neared the shore, he put his left hand on the gunwale, pulled out his sword and whacked off his hand and threw it on the shore. The “king” kept his word, and Barra has been McNeil (etc.) ever since.

I had heard from my father (1960’s) that it was a rowboat race between MacNeil and MacDonald for ownership of the island. MacDonald was about to win so MacNeil cut his hand off and threw it onto the island to win. What a heritage.

I was having trouble with Andy being rubbish at grand theft auto and getting out of and back into the car. I was afraid he was going to get run over by some cellphone talking driver. Then I realized that ps2 is play station 2 and not some little european car.

Correction my dear - It was Zeus (not Appollo) that determined the center of the earth and planted the omphalos stone. He sent birds to each end of the earth and had them fly towards each other - then he dropped the stone where they met. He of course compensated for the speed differential between the birds, for the wind and also for the fact the one of the birds had a tendency to bend right when it would try to fly in a straight line. You see, determining the center of the earth required precision, and Zeus delivered.

Yay!!! Finally, a Greece blog!! The pictures are absolutely BEAUTIFUL!! I cannot wait to go. By the way, I hope Caton’s birthday either already passed or that she doesn’t read this because now she knows that Mark got her jewelry! Way to ruin the surprise. I also agree that the air mattress is quite comfy (except for the one morning Melinda and I woke up on the floor because we didn’t close the valve properly), and one of the many reasons to visit T-Bone and A-Rod. Side note- I had another Andy sighting, well sorta. Can’t remember if I told you guys that I once met Asian Andy which was what I thought Andy would look like if he were Asian, well the new season of Survivor started and I’ve decided that Dan (the Astronaut) is Older Andy. He reminded me so much of someone and then I thought “Oh, it’s Andy!”. He’s a really great guy, and not nerdy, and he I think he looks like Andy in 25 years (or so). Right now I’m on the John Lewis website checking out duvet covers. I’m reading a Jane Green book (and it talks about living in Belsize Park and Hampstead- made me think of you and Caton)and she just went shopping at John Lewis. I stopped and thought “that’s the place I wanted to go shopping!”. Well, now I’m checking out all the stuff on the website. Very cute. Oh, Melinda finally gave me the chocolate you guys bought me, THANK YOU!!! At quiz night the other night we were starving and whipped it out, and sure enough it was a HUGE hit and pretty much almost gone by the time the night was over. Thanks again! I miss you guys!!!

Three things….Tiffany, we couldn’t have been more proud of you at that very moment when you yelled at the woman. I watched the whole thing go down, and you might have over-reacted a bit about it, but she was a B and needed to know it. Next time though, make sure you are wearing your Canadian flag sweatshirt when you decide to yell like that(I still think that one was funny, so I thought I’d use it again). Second thing, I know what you mean about the sunlight, I think the same thing everyday around 4:30 when I look out the window. That was actually one of the hardest things for me when I moved to New York, having less sunlight. Third thing, but this one is for Patrick— did you not read our second blog? We clearly gave you and Whitey a shoutout and you didn’t even have the decency to thank us!!

Perhaps the beep is a CO detector with a bad battery locked in the basement without any way to get to it. I suggest you wait a few weeks and check it out.

A few corrections & additions…

1) He played All of Me, not At Last.
2) All player pianos (until very recently) ran on suction. The more modern ones use an electric pump instead of foot pedals.
3) At first they punched the scrolls by hand, just took the score and made them, hence the need for an expression line to tell you how to adjust tempo & volume during the piece. Later they created the machine that “recorded” pianists. At the same time that they added marginal perforations to automatically adjust volume (tempo was in the recording, the roll moved at constant speed when recorded and played back).
4) He also had two early model Edison gramophones so we could here the only available alternative to music reproduction at the time. They sounded pretty bad. One of the gramophones used the wax cylinder “records” (these predated the disk shaped ones, and were very short lived).

I wonder if we were in the same museum…

Amsterdam was awesome, I thought it was so pretty. You should definitely check out Anne Frank’s House, we rented a little paddle boat and went up and down the little canals, it was alot of fun. I hear the Heineken museum is fun, but it was closed when I was there. I went to a sex show, I do recommend it only because it’s an experience. Beautiful little city, that’s for sure! Have fun!! When exactly are you coming to America? We miss you!
