Hot Comma Chocolate Cake
Tuesday was our anniversary, and Andy and I decided to indulge in a celebratory fancy coffee and dessert. We have quite a selection of appropriate venues for such indulgence in our neighborhood, and we decided - for no reason really - to go with Moment Espresso Bar. Gazing at the menu, we decided on a latte for me and a cappuccino for Andy. Slightly boring, perhaps, but the only choice that would have been surprising was not a particularly yummy one - Nescafe. That’s right. This espresso bar had Nescafe on the menu. OR Nescafe with Milk, if you feel so inclined. 1 pound 50. Now I happen to have Nescafe and milk here, and I am now thinking that this could be a very profitable business. OK, if anyone’s interested, I am now offering Nescafe for 70p, Nescafe with Milk or sugar for 95p, and Nescafe with milk AND sugar for a mere 1.10. I am SOOO undercutting the Moment Espresso Bar. PLUS, Nescafe is about 1.50 for a whole jug of it. So I think that’s probably about a 4000% profit margin. awesome.
While at Moment Espresso Bar, we also had to choose a dessert to share. Normally the sharing of desserts can be a bit problematic for us, because I almost ALWAYS want something chocolate, and Andy almost ALWAYS wants anything but. Cheesecake, tiramisu, and crème brulée are frequent selections. I tend to be a bit closed-minded in the vain of, “but where’s the chocolate in those?” So anyway, I wanted either the chocolate mousse cake or the hot chocolate cake, and after we both scoped the desserts, we agreed that a chocolate selection would be best. The waitress recommended the hot chocolate cake and so we ordered it. BUT then we realiSed that the Moment Espresso Bar had made a grave mistake. Either the cake we received would be cake of the hot chocolate variety - like made out of a mug of hot chocolate somehow - or it should really be called hot comma chocolate cake. Like this “Hot, Chocolate Cake.” How were WE to know?! After further discussion we decided that the cake would most certainly be hot cake of the chocolate variety rather than cake of the hot chocolate variety, and then it came, and it was, and we decided that they were most certainly wrong wrong wrong. But then we didn’t mind so much, because this cake was DEEEElicious.
