Today, the E-mail
Today is quite possibly the first day you’re reading our blog, and that is quite possibly because today is the first day we have told any of you about it. So, welcome! One additional note - if you look in the top, right-hand corner, above the picture, there is a link to some photos, so check that out if you’re interested. Moving on. . .
I want to tell you about our weekend. First of all, the weather was perfect. Low 80’s and sunny as could be. Saturday we went to the British Museum, or as Andy calls it, the British Museum (. . . of stolen artifacts). I have to say I think it’s my new favorite museum. First of all, it’s huge. In the center, there is an enormous, round atrium with a gorgeous glass ceiling. The gallaries surround the atrium, and they are filled to the brim with some of the most impressive historical objects I have seen . . . many of which, as Andy noted, were taken from countries all over the world after England conquered them. I like to ignore that bit.
I have been there twice now, and so far I am most impressed with the ancient Greek and Roman statues and the Mummies. These statues are insane. They are enormous, some of them are intricately decorated, and since they are stone (and therefore VERY hard to move and relatively hard to damage), they are not behind glass or even behind velvet ropes. They are right there in the gallery, ready to be gazed upon. As for the mummies, I have to say - a little freaky. That’s a case where I did feel bad for the Egyptian people. Thousands of years ago, people went to great lengths to preserve and bury their relatives in a manner consistent with their religious beliefs, etc., and now, these bodies and their beautifully decorated and preserved sarcophogi are in the British Museum in London, with labels like, “mummy of an unidentified, middle aged female.” Geeze.
The other thing about the British Museum is that they have the Rosetta stone. That’s pretty amazing, as well.
The rest of the weekend was wonderful, too, but the only real highlight is I got a bit of sunburn on my shoulders and arms. The good thing about being in England is that I bet I’m not the most sunburned girl around today!
OK, too long already. I hope you like the blog, and go check out the British Museum when you get a chance. Best part? It’s FREE!
